Why Can't I Light the Bunsen Burner?

If you cannot activate the Bunsen burner in the Chemistry Laboratory (position Zn) at the Shrine of Interaction (transporter component Cu), it can be for one of three different reasons:

You can very easily correct the selection of Zn problem, but the gas supply problem is a little more complicated.  If you are missing something in your inventory you will have to go and get it or make it.

Answer to Number 1:  There are 2 room selectors that affect the working of the utilities in the Chemistry Lab. Both need to be set to the Zn position.

The first one is seen in the picture below with a green zoom arrow pointing to it. This area is referred to as the Hall and is located between the rooms (labs and workshop that are through the doorway straight ahead) and the Transporter itself that is behind us in this picture.

In the Hall (Transporter Module Cu)

Zoom into and look closely at the room selector here in the Hall. Now you can choose (select) Zn as in the picture below.

Zoomed in to view the room selector

The second one is in the Chemistry Lab itself, just to the left of the door as you face the Hall. Note in the picture below the selector (switch) on the left and the Transporter to the right in the Hall. Choose Zn as in the picture below.

Answer to Number 2:  You have to go back to the Control Room (Transporter Module Ti).  When you first enter the Control Room and move forward you will come to the Transporter Control Panel. Once power is available to the Control Room and the switch is turned on for the Transporter a row of green lights will appear on the Transporter Control Panel showing the route of the Transporter as seen in the picture below.

Transporter Control Panel

To the left of the Transporter Control Panel you will find another Control Panel which determines what operation will take place at the Fractionating Plant.

With the top button pushed on (Figure 1 below), liquids that consist of several components (like a perfume) can be divided (fractionated) into their individual components within the fractionating column at the Organic Chemistry Laboratory (Transporter Module C).

Figure 1

With the bottom button pushed on (Figure 2 below), crude oil can be separated into its individual components, one of which is natural gas for the Bunsen burner.

Figure 2

Thus you must decide whether you want to use the Bunsen burner (Setting shown in Figure 2), or to separate (fractionate) liquids into their individual components (Setting shown in Figure 1). You can not do both with either one of the settings shown above.

And finally you have to set the temperature correctly on the Temperature Control Panel (Figure 3 below) that is located in the Organic Chemistry Laboratory (Transporter Module C). Once the temperature is set properly, crude oil will be separated into its components. Note the flames (burning gas) being shown at the end of the red arrow. Gas should now be flowing to the Chemistry Lab.

Answer to Number 3:  You must pick up everything that you can in the Chemistry Lab before the Bunsen Burner will light.  Obviously you must also have the Stalactite in your inventory since that is what you will be heating with the Bunsen burner. The following list of inventory items should be in your inventory at this time. The area where this item was either found or made is indicated in blue after the name of the item. If you do not have a particular item in your inventory and do have all the settings shown above set correctly, but are still unable to light the Bunsen burner, then you apparently must go to that area and get the missing item.

Why can't I set the temperatures in the Organic Chemistry Lab?

If you cannot regulate the temperature in the Organic Chemistry Lab (Transporter Module C), it can be for one of three different reasons:

1 )  You have not pushed the top button on the Fractionating Plant Control Panel back in the Control Room (Transporter Module Ti).

          or

2 )  You have not placed the pineapple-pear-perfume into the beaker (glass container) inside the container for fractional distillation and closed the cover.

          or

3 )  You have missed picking up or making something that needs to be in your inventory.  Someone suggested that it is possible to have something in your inventory that is not yet supposed to be there and that this could possibly prevent the Control Panel from working.  This has not yet been confirmed.

Answer to Number 1:  You have to go back to the Control Room (Transporter Module Ti).  Move forward once toward the Transporter Control Panel and then turn left to the Control Panel that determines what operation will take place at the Fractionating Plant.  Push the top button as seen in the picture below.  This setting allows liquids that are placed into the Fractionating Chamber (open chamber on the left side of the picture) to be divided (fractionated) into their individual components.

    Control Panel for Fractionating Plant

Answer to Number 2:  In the Organic Chemistry Lab you must locate (forward twice, turn right) the container for fractional distillation. Now open it and place the pineapple-pear perfume into the beaker inside the distillation chamber and close it. Once the perfume is in the chamber you won't be able to remove it (that's OK). However if for some reason you leave the lab before distilling the perfume and then return to do it, the perfume may no longer be in the distillation chamber. Again this is OK. Simply open the chamber and insert the perfume from your inventory into the beaker again and then regulate the temperature control panel on the right so that you can fractionate (separate) the perfume into its individual components.

Left Picture - Fractional Distillation Chamber.
Right Picture - Pineapple-pear perfume being placed into the beaker.

Now you should be able to regulate the temperature correctly as seen in the picture below.  If not, then double check numbers 1 and 2 above and then go to number 3 and see if you are missing something that should be in your inventory.

Answer to Number 3:  The following list of inventory items should be in your inventory at this time. The area where this item was either found or made is indicated in blue after the name of the item. If you do not have a particular item in your inventory and do have all the settings shown above set correctly, but are still unable to regulate the temperature for fractionating the pineapple-pear perfume, then you apparently must go to that area and get the missing item.
